Student Loan Biden Forgiveness: Despite the Supreme Court’s rejection of President Joe Biden’s signature Student Loan Biden Forgiveness programme in late June, his administration has found ways to cancel more than $48 billion in debt since then, according to a recent CNN article.

The cancellations were made possible by existing federal student loan forgiveness programmes, which are restricted to certain types of borrowers, such as public-sector workers, people defrauded by for-profit colleges, and borrowers who have paid for at least 20 years.

These programmes are distinct from the rejected forgiveness plan, which would have erased approximately $430 billion of the $1.6 trillion in outstanding federal student loan debt all at once.

How Do I Qualify for Student Loan Biden Forgiveness?

The requirements for student loan forgiveness differ depending on the programme. Here are the selection criteria for a few popular choices:

1. Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF):

To qualify for PSLF, you must work full-time for 10 years in a qualifying organisation, which includes government agencies and 501(3) non-profits. You must also make 120 qualifying student loan payments, specifically on an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan.

2. Teacher Loan Forgiveness:

To be eligible for this programme, you must teach full-time for five years in a low-income school or educational service agency. You may be eligible for up to $17,500 in student loan forgiveness depending on the subject you teach.

3. NURSE Corps Loan Forgiveness:

After two years, this federal programme forgives up to 60% of your student loan balance, with an additional 25% forgiven after a third year. Working as a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, or nurse faculty member who serves a high-need population in a critical shortage area is one of the requirements.

4. Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Plans:

If you’ve been on an IDR plan for 20 or 25 years and have made all of your payments on time, you may be eligible for student loan forgiveness of your remaining balance.

How Long Does it Take to Get Student Loan Biden Forgiveness?

According to Investopedia, if you qualify for student loan forgiveness or discharge in full and have applied, you will receive notification and will no longer be required to make payments.

Depending on the programme you applied for, you may even be eligible for a refund. If only a portion of your debt is cancelled or discharged, you will still be responsible for repaying the remainder. There may be ramifications for your taxes, credit score, and overall financial health.

What happens if I don’t Qualify for Loan Forgiveness?

If you are not eligible for loan forgiveness, you must continue to make payments on your student loans. If you’re having trouble making payments, you might want to think about refinancing, consolidating, or switching to an income-driven repayment plan. If you are experiencing financial hardship, you can also look into deferment or forbearance options.

Please keep in mind that federal loan forgiveness programmes do not apply to private student loans. Some private lenders, on the other hand, provide their own loan forgiveness programmes or other forms of assistance. To learn more about your options, contact your lender directly.
